Where is God in the Stretch?

There are times in our life and in our business where ends simply don’t meet. When the budget is spread so thinly you wonder how far you can really drive on an empty fuel tank. And your time –  you barely lay your head on the pillow before the alarm is screaming at you to get up and do it all again.

It’s times like this when life is like Spaghetti Bolognese.

Let me explain.

Have you ever made Spag Bog mince go so far that the kids wonder what this wonderful new concoction is? We have. We grate in some carrot, maybe a zucchini, add a can of corn and half a packet of frozen peas… then we add in a can of lentils (or two) to make it really go the length of our table. It really is amazing how far you can get that one packet of mince to go when you learn to stretch it out.

Sometimes you feel like mince that has been stretched too far. And you sit looking at your plate wondering when your breakthrough is going to come? When this time of stretching will finally be over?

And you may even wonder ‘Where is God in the stretch’.

But I’m here to tell you that when life gets tough and you feel like the storm is never-ending that’s when God is at His best. It’s a time when we can no longer do it in our own strength. When we are weak – He is strong.

I know what it’s like to live stretched almost to breaking point, and sometimes beyond. And in this place He’s brought me to my knees, the ultimate place of surrender. I’ve had to surrender my fears, my worries and even my dreams – and sometimes daily. But surrender is only the first step. I’ve discovered that God can only move when we give Him permission to move. He asks us to make the first step.

To know what that move is we need to seek it. It might be an impression, a scripture, or a word from a trusted elder that resonates with you. Encouraging you to move, and it’s only when we take that step, the step of faith that God can move mountains.

Look at the heroes in the Word of God.

Gideon only freed an oppressed people because he waved a torch and shouted “The sword of the Lord and of Gideon”.

Joseph only led a nation because he shared his dream with his doubting brothers.

Esther only saved her people from slaughter because she wore a dress and stood in front of a king. Jesus only saved the world because he freely laid down His life.

God requires us to move so He can move with you and for you.

The stretch is where we become so evermore reliant upon our King. And often, it’s right where He wants us.

“My fellow believers, when it seems as though you are facing nothing but difficulties see it as an invaluable opportunity to experience the greatest joy that you can! For you know that when your faith is tested it stirs up power within you to endure all things. And then as your endurance grows even stronger it will release perfection into every part of your being until there is nothing missing and nothing lacking.”

James 1: 2- 4 The Passion Translation

Set aside time to spend with Him especially to seek out your next move. To ask God what He wants you to do to act out your faith. It might be; to set aside time every morning to be with Him, or make that call and ask for forgiveness, or to simply pray out loud in agreement with your husband. Whatever it is – it will require a leap of faith but I encourage you to step out and watch God move mountains and see yourself thrive in the stretch.
