Arise and Shine

The last few months God has been restoring me. He has been speaking directly into my heart and healing areas in my heart that were not too pleasant. He has been restoring my confidence in who I am in Him, and reminding me of who He has created me to be.

It is too easy to get caught on the negatives or on the things of the world rather than taking the time to focus on Him. It is too easy to just jump in and do what needs to be done every day, rather than be still in His presence and get all we need for our day from Him. It is too easy to work in our own strength rather than tune into Him for every step of the way and live in the comfort of knowing that He has a good and perfect plan for our lives.

As I was driving, God was speaking to me about our big green wheelie bins. We put our rubbish ‘trash’ in the bin, the garbage collector comes and picks it up, and then it is gone. It doesn’t matter how rotten, smelly or manky our rubbish is – the truck takes it all, and our bin is empty ready for the new rubbish.

Through this, God was showing me that we often have rubbish thoughts, the things we are saying and doing can be rubbish, but mostly the things we say and do to ourselves!

When we trash ourselves there is no room for God to move. When we trash ourselves, we are heaping coals on our own heads and putting curses on ourselves. But it goes much further than that – when we trash ourselves, we are essentially telling God that His workmanship is less than perfect and that He made a mistake. Think about that. Would you tell God that His sunsets are awful, or these flowers were not created perfectly?

If you are feeling that this has hit home, God is calling you to put your trash in His holy bin so He can come with this God sized rubbish truck and take our trash away.

Prayerfully consider the following ‘trash talk’;

  • I’m not good enough
  • I’ll never succeed
  • I don’t know why (insert name) loves me
  • I’m an awful person
  • I’m too fat / skinny / ugly / tall / short / etc.
  • I’m a terrible wife / mother / singer / dancer / creative / cook
  • Why would God do this to me?
  • I can’t do (insert your calling / mission / assignment)
  • I’ll never be good / smart / talented enough
  • I’m a loser / idiot
  • I don’t have what it takes to succeed

Now this is just a quick list, I’m sure you have experienced how far this list can go on and on once you start in that negative ‘trash-talk’ space. But to truly get rid of this trash, you need to know what trash you are saying to yourself (and others) so you can put it in the holy bin. I encourage you to write these down on some scrap paper if you need to.

Once you are done, go on and put that trash in the holy bin. For some you will need to visualise it, others will need to do the actual act of putting that paper in their big green wheelie bin.

Now the most important step is to pray. Thank God for who He made you to be. Ask God to release you of that thinking, ask Him for forgiveness and ask Him to restore your heart. Here is a prayer I have written which you can use, or you can pray your own prayer.

Dear Lord Jesus. Thank you for creating me just the way I am. Thank you that you knit me together in my mothers’ womb and you have a good and perfect plan for my life. You know me Lord and you know who I am and who you have created me to be. Thank you that you don’t make mistakes and thank you that I am not a mistake. Lord, I am sorry for every time I have trash talked myself or others around me. I’m sorry for cursing myself and others around me, and even for cursing you. Lord, I’m sorry for dwelling on the things I can’t change, or for accepting those darts of the wicked one and allowing him to poison my thoughts and attitudes. Lord I cut off all word curses right now that I have said, though or written about myself and others. I cut off all word curses that have been said, thought or written over me by others. I know that you are a good God, who loves me and cares for me and wants relationship with me. Lord I ask that you restore my faith in you, restore my thought patterns and restore my emotions. I ask that you would heal those wounds in my heart that have been caused by the hurts of this world or others in in, and you would heal the beliefs that I have made about myself that are not true. Help me to remember who I am in you and how much you love and care for me. I thank you Lord for your restoration, I thank you for your healing. I love you Lord. Amen.

Now the trash has been collected, I encourage you to go and find yourself some scriptures to write out and place around the house. Write up a prayer and pop in on the toilet door, or bathroom mirror, or in your closet to read every day you see it. Memorise scriptures that you need to remind you of who you are in Christ.

Here are just a few things that God says you are;

  • You are Loved.
  • You are His.
  • You are worthy.
  • You have been redeemed.
  • You are forgiven.
  • You have been made right.
  • You have a purpose.
  • You are called.
  • You are blessed.

One of the strategies you can use is to ask God for a scripture you can hold onto when times get tough. The scripture God has given me is Ephesians 3:20-21

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

When we truly understand who we are in Christ, we find our voice, we find our passion, we find our peace and we find our joy. We can then rise and be the light on the hill, we can then be the salt of the earth, providing a pleasing fragrance wherever we go.
